My dissertation’s title is ‘to what extend the internet effect teenagers and how to cure the problem’. I investigated the positives and negatives of the internet to teenagers on a variety different aspects such as in family, education and leisures.

After I study about these, I decided to do an animation as the main outcome because teenagers have been exposing to use the technology (PC and Internet) and aware of moving image with the existing of YouTube. The title of my animation is How to stay safe on the internet. The aim of the animation is to educate and work as a guidance to the target audience, teenagers to stay safe while they are using the internet. This is due to there are a lot of danger and harm that the internet can give to them such as internet addiction and cyberbullying.

I also designed a CD cover and added the animation into the CD. My proposed outcomes are a mobile app and a website. I think these two proposed outcomes are the best possible products as most teenagers own a smartphone and have a personal computer either by themselves or sharing with a family member. The mobile apps and websites contains further informations and tips about staying safe on the internet.

Website

I also create a website called satysafe.com. It is open to everyone; the website contains the animation that I created, a mini exercise for the audience to complete after they watch the animation, some tips for them to stay safe on the internet and some call to actions. A website is also easy for anybody (especially the target audience) to access and interact with it.

I think having a website and a mobile apps are tie with my main outcome which is an animation because animation is on screen so does mobile apps and websites. I like the simplicity of the website and it is very straight forward especially I used a sans serif font and a lighter background colour.

Mobile Apps

Stay Safe is a mobile apps to educate the target audience which is teenagers. Stay Safe has different version however, this version focuses on the internet. It is to help teenagers to staying safe while using the internet.

This mobile apps contains: a link to the website (www.staysafecom), solutions to any of their problems such as internet addiction or cyber bullying, animation for them to watch that related to the subject , report any personal problems. This mobile apps also allow them to block some people that potentially can harm them emotionally.

I am not please with the layout of the mobile apps. This is due to lack of development and time management. I think if I have more time to think about the layout and colour scheme, the mobile apps will look so much better.

I think for this module, my time management was so bad, this was because I have to write a dissertation at the same time which I found it difficult to divide my time.

Logo

Okay, I am proposing to create a mobile apps  and a website to educate teenager to stay safe on the internet. The apps is called Stay Safe. The apps will have a various different type of staying safe (e.g. house, school, friends, stranger), but for this I will focusing on the Internet.

Images below are some of my sketches for this app.

What is unique about my app?
1. focus on safety of using the internet
2. have a block button that able to block a person
3. have animation as well as a website to access.
4.open to everyone.

CD cover

This is my printed version of CD cover. I am not please with the design as I still think that :-
1. Too dark for the target audience - not attractive enough to attract teenagers
2. the cover does not really represent the title of the animation which is 'how to stay safe on the internet'
3. Lack of time to change the design and contextual references.

I really want my CD cover to be 99% illustrative, but it would be impossible as my animation are 40% typography and 60% illustration. If I make the Cover 99% illustrative, it will not work as a set with the animation.

Final CD cover

Image above is my final design for the CD cover.

I wanted to create something that can interact with the target audience, so one of my peer suggested to created a mini exercise  because after the target audience watch the animation, they can answer the mini exercise to see if the animation is understandable. I know it is very simple exercise  but I hope this will at least boost their focus and understanding on the subject.

I am also planning to make a wrap to cover the CD case.
I probably going to print it next week because I did not plan to design this at the very first.

After I had a bit of play with the cover, I finally decide to use the PC illustration that I used for the animation as part of the CD cover. It looks more professional and tie with the animation.

I am sooooo struggling to pick the right colour for the title 'How to stay safe on the internet'. I like white, but I think it would be easier if the background pattern is more subtle.

Image X and Y.
Image Y - I tried to delete the background pattern behind the title and i think it makes the cover looks a bit empty.
Image X - lowed the opacity and it look nicer. I might use this one as the cover.

I use the same font throughout the animation, as well as the cover.

I think the cover will be more attractive if I use the foil technique (the white pattern)  in screen print workshop.

Contextual references

  • I want my cover to work as a set with the animation by using some elements from the animation as the cover.
  • I want the cover to have like an envelope to protect it and it will make the CD more precious to represent staying safe.
  • Use a contrast colour between the background colour and the title
  • Add a codebar, price and copyright at the back cover.

CD Cover

For submission, I am planning to put the animation in a CD then design a CD cover for it.
I bought the CD from the library and I will use its cover for my template CD cover.  I am also planning to design a sticker to stick onto of the CD.

Images above are the sketches. (sorry if it too sketchy)

I came out with these designs. I am not very please with it as I think I can do better than this. This cover also too plain to attract the target audiences' attention and the colour is too dark. I might need to add something into the cover to make it more bright and attractive. The title is to small perhaps, I need to make it bigger.

Final animation : How to stay safe on the internet

How To Stay Safe On The Internet from zatul fakharuldin on Vimeo.

This is the animation that I have produced for practical OUIL601. I am quite please with it. Animation took longer than I thought ! and I feel relief that I simplified my idea from 2 animation to 1 animation.

All photographs on the animation took by myself when I was travelling, I even ask one of my friend for permission to put her tiny photograph (that I took) on the animation as one of the profile picture.

Layout.
Your Social media - were inspired by Facebook and Twitter
Your Email - were inspired by OutLook and Gmail.

Instead of 'That's is the end', at first i was thinking to put 'Goodbye', however when I added the 'goodbye' on the animation, it sound so wrong. i think it is because of the tone of voice of the word that is not suitable for the rest of the animation (as originally the 'goodbye' is for my other animation project for OUIL603 which the target audience is 3-5 years old and the tone is more high pitch than the target audience for this animation)

I thick it is important for me to keep the same concept throughout the animation which is computer screen by adding a curses, illustrations of pc/laptop etc. This strongly linked to the theme of the animation that is 'Internet'.

Test8 from zatul on Vimeo.

I changed my animation quite a lot since yesterday. I am quite please with the change (even though it took me hours)

1. I have made some background textured to give more depth.
2. I redesigned 'Your Social Media', inspired by twitter and Facebook. I also added a laptop to indicate that social media can be open on a laptop with wifi connection.
3. If I have more time, I want to change the 'Do not tell people your password' to 'Do not tell anybody your password'.

I still think I need more gap/seconds between the 2nd and 3rd point of the animation because so far, i think the animation go so quickly which hurt my eyes.
